ZUR PERSON
Walter Kratner (* 1954 in Graz) ist ein österreichischer Künstler.
Er studierte Design und Kunstgeschichte in Florenz. Der akademischen Ausbildung schlossen sich langjährige Aufenthalte in der Schweiz (Bern) und in den USA an. Auf Einladung realisierte er Projekte für das „Carl Djerassi Art Program“ und für das Museum Exploratorium in San Francisco.
Gesellschaftliche und persönliche Amnesie beschäftigen diesen Künstler. Oft sind es mit Kohlenstaub verdunkelte, historische Fotografien, die den Zerfall des Erinnerungsbildes belegen. Er wurde von der Diözese Graz-Seckau mit der künstlerischen Ausgestaltung der Weizer Taborkirche beauftragt. Er konzipierte bis 2018 „kunst am weizberg“ und ist zurzeit Kurator für „pfingstArt“ in Weiz.
Im Mai 2012 gestaltete Kratner neben der Weizbergkirche ein Mahnmal ("Porajmos") zum Gedenken an die systematische Ermordung der Roma und Sinti in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. (Zit.: Wikipedia)

Walter Kratner was born in 1954 in Graz (Austria). He recieved his education from the University of Florence (Design and History of Art). He lived for many years in Switzerland and San Francisco.
His site specific installation works include in Austria the Church of Tabor and the Memorial ("Porajmos") to the Sinti and Roma Victims of National Socialism. He recieved a 2002 Carl Djerassi Artists-In Residence Program Award. He exhibited his work at the Exploratorium, The Refusalon Gallery, the Projects Room in San Francisco, in Teheran and Istanbul, Vienna, Berlin, Rome, Hamburg, Graz and in different places and cultural institutions in Europe.
His revisited photographs used to transform and reconstruct memory and history. Recently the artist reflects on the situation for refugees in Europe and in the Middle East.

Walter Kratner (nato a Graz nel 1954) ha studiato Grafica, Design e Storia dell`Arte a Norimberga e a Firenze. Ha trascorso molti anni in Svizzera (Berna) e negli Stati Uniti. Invitato dal “Carl Djerassi Art Program” e dal Museo “Exploratorium” di San Francisco ha allestito suggestivie installazioni realizzati site specific e progetti interattive. Sono seguiti numerosi personali ed esposizioni di gruppo in diverse gallerie e musei di New York, San Francisco, Berlino, Vienna, Roma, Amburgo, Offenburg, Teheran, Istanbul, Stuttgart, Marburg e Graz.
L´amnesia sociale e personale è un tema ricorrente nel lavoro dell`artista negli ultimi anni. Immagini d`archivio e disegni semi graffiati e oscurati dimostrano la distruzione della memoria. Accanto a interventi concettuali in spazi storici e pubblici l`artista è stato incaricato dalla diocesi di Graz per il rinnovo artistico dello spazio sacrale della Chiesa romana di “San Tomaso sul Tabor”. Attualmente è anche curatore di una prestigiosa rassegna d`arte contemporanea (“Kunst am Weizberg”) nella Stiria. Walter Kratner e anche autore di una installazione commemorativa (“Porajmos”) alla memoria di tutti I deportati rom e sinti durante gli anni del fascismo.
